General
– Competitions are open to financial members only.
– People who are considering membership may enter images for comment on up to two occasions. Points and grades will not be awarded.
– There are two grades; Newcomer and Open.
– A new member is placed in the Newcomers grade for one year or until they have accumulated five or more Honours awards, whichever comes sooner.
– Submitting an image for comment grants MPS permission to publicly display that image at MPS meetings for the purpose of allowing a judge to make comments.
– The competitions held on the second Tuesday of the month normally have two categories, which are Open Subject and Set Subject. Images portraying any subject can be submitted in the Open category.
– A total of up to three images may be submitted each month in any combination of set and open subject.
– The entered images must be digital.
– Titles for images are optional. “No Title” is acceptable.
– Images are judged and given awards as shown below. Points gained are accumulated during the year and go towards the Set Aggregate Points, Open Aggregate Points and Overall Aggregate Points trophies awarded at the end of the year.
– Awards: Honours 10 points
Highly Commended 8 points
Merit 6 points
Accepted 4 points
– An extra point is awarded if two or more images are submitted in the Set Subject category of a particular month.
– A judge’s award is final unless the judge chooses to change the award.
– Certificates are awarded for the Set Subject Image of the Night and the Open Subject Image of the Night. A bonus point is awarded for each one.
– An image can only be submitted once in a monthly club competition unless it has been passed in/Not Accepted, in which case it may be submitted in a subsequent competition.
– Images entered in the monthly club competition may be used in other club competitions e.g. Set of Four, NZ Natural History
– Images must originate from photographs captured by the photographer.
– Editing and processing of images is permitted provided it is carried out by the author. For example, removing objects with cloning and healing tools, inserting objects and replacing objects such as skies, are permitted but the source material used must be the photographer’s own work.
– Images may consist of multiple layers, but all layers must be the photographer’s own creative work including adjustment layers. Textures and overlays purchased or obtained online are not permitted.
– Computer-generated graphics and images created using generative AI must not be incorporated in the image.
– Images by the same author which differ only slightly from one another will be regarded as being the same image. For the purposes of this rule, multiple images by the same author taken in rapid succession (e.g. burst mode), or differing only by post processing (e.g. crop, colour settings) will be deemed a single image and are therefore ineligible to enter again.
– Final determination regarding the similarity of images will be made by the MPS committee.
– The MPS committee may declare ineligible for entry an image that it deems inappropriate. Images should be suitable for a family environment. The committee’s decision will be final.

Use of Members’ Images
– Entering an image into an MPS competition or into an external competition via MPS, grants the club permission to publicly display that image at MPS meetings for the purposes of competition and recognising good work.
– MPS wants to display those images which are awarded Honours and Highly Commended on the MPS website, Facebook and other social media and promotional publications. Submitting a competition entry grants the club permission to display that image unless the member opts out by including “COMPETITION USE ONLY” in the title of the image.
– Any other use of a member’s image will only occur with the prior permission of the author, e.g. club representation in external competitions.
– Images will remain the property of their author at all times and the author will be acknowledged whenever possible.
